We Are History – A Special Exhibition of Shiy De-jinn’s Work Legends- Private Collections of Shiy De-jinn’s Work
Shiy De-jinn is regarded as one of the most important painters in Taiwanese art history. This year marks forty years since this renowned painter passed away. Curator Gu Hao-yu has put together two special exhibits showcasing Shiy De-jinn’s work to pay respects to this great artist. The first exhibit, We Are History, a special exhibition of Shiy De-jinn’s work, opens on September 10 at the Chishang Art Center. The second, Legends, private collections of Shiy De-jinn’s work, opens on December 24.
Shiy De-jinn was born in Sichuan in 1923. From an early age, Shiy dedicated himself to the arts. After moving out of Sichuan, Shiy lived and worked in Taiwan, Europe and the US to immerse himself in the modern arts movement. Shiy eventually returned to Taiwan. He didn’t want to become the stereotype of what Westerners expected Eastern painters should be. Therefore, he moved his artistic endeavors to Taiwan. Shiy’s work reflects his deep admiration for Taiwan as a place. He developed a unique style to capture Taiwan’s natural beauty. Shiy’s diverse array of work embodies Taiwanese culture, wildlife, plants, architecture and landscapes. People today till talk about Shiy’s process for making portraits. While painting, he talked to his subjects. After finishing, Shiy gave the finished portrait to the person he was painting. Therefore, his portraits are very lifelike and always true to his subjects. The paintings in We Are History showcase Shiy’s work, which reflects everyday life for everyday people. For Shiy, history is the memory left behind of a particular place.
The first exhibit of the series is comprised of works lent by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and the National Museum of History. The second exhibit is comprised of works lent by private collectors of Shiy De-jinn’s paintings and writings. Take this opportunity to experience his incredible work firsthand. Through Shiy’s work, witness the cultural landscape of Taiwan during the 60s and 70s. These collections embody a simple peace that was part of Taiwanese life back then.
