The 2nd annual Southern CaoCao Festival is just around the corner! The “southern” part refers to the south of Taitung. “CaoCao” comes from the Paiwanese word Kanadun Caocao which means people. The Southern CaoCao Festival was names to represent the festival of the southern tribes!
The core value of the Southern CaoCao Festival is to inherit and pass on by hosting music festivals, workshops, and forums. Through these events, the hope is to pass on the tribal traditions and wisdom, while also showcasing the unique cultural features to guests and visitors. The event will take place in Jinlun. Jinlun is home to the Paiwan and Rukai Tribes. As this area hasn’t been over-developed, it remains simple and rustic while also being conveniently located and easily accessible from Taitung City and other places on the South Link.
While many tourist events are held during the summer time to attract more visitors, why is the Southern CaoCao Festival still being held in May? The organizers know the festival attracts visitors who are interested in cultural experiences. The festivals’ markets and workshops will bring business to the South Link, helping vendors out during the low season. The reason behind the scheduling really is quite moving!
Beginning this May 7th, there will be various exciting events each weekend. The Opening Music Festival has a strong list of performers, including headlining tribal singers who will bring us a feast for our ears. The CaoCao Market is a gathering of all the delicacies of the South Link. More than twenty popular local eats will satisfy all of your food cravings. The five scheduled cultural workshops will be held in Jinlun, Xinxing, Jialan, and Tuban Tribal Villages. This is the perfect opportunity for visitors to explore the tribal villages and experience cultural inheritance first hand. Speakers from a variety of fields will share on topics such as regional revitalization, commuting to work, and youth returning to the villages in the Southern Forum.
