Chenggong Fishing Harbor is all about the seafood! The fresh, delicious, and inexpensive seafood is what most people will think of when mentioning the harbor. This year, the Taitung Slow Foods Festival will move towards the coast and focus on “slow fish” and “food cultures of the east coast.” The festival will bring all the best eats of the east coast so that guests will be able to taste the local eats and experience living and loving the ocean.
Taiwan is surrounded by water and relies heavily on the ocean. Seafood is a common ingredient in the average household. However, not many people pay attention to the origin of the fish or the negative effects overfishing has on our oceans. The ocean isn’t our refrigerator and natural resources in the sea will eventually run dry.
To sustain the diverse ocean ecosystem, international slow food organizations have started the concept of Slow Fish, promoting good, clean, and fair fish to the public so that they will become educated on how to select seafood. This includes understanding the origin of the fish, eating fish in season, and consuming it in moderation. The hope is to have consumers supervise the fishing industry by supporting eco-friendly fishing so that the ocean will be able to return to the lively state it was before.
In the spirit of the Slow Fish idea, Taitung’s Slow Foods Festival Trendy Table will encourage local kitchens to use pole and line, set net, spearfishing, longline, and other eco-friendly fishing methods to catch the season fish, or use seafood harvested from ecological farming or plant-based fish farms to create unique dishes and promote the traditional food culture of the east coast, Green Island, and Orchid Island. Come visit the Slow Foods Festival in April to taste the flavors of the sea and listen to the stories of the ocean. Come to the table with us and protect our precious ocean resources!
