Taitung has a multiethnic group society made up of 7 aboriginal tribes. The culture and traditions have been woven intricately together in this land. Are you visiting Taitung and looking to experience the mysterious and lovely tribal cultures? The biennial “Puyuma Tribe Joint Festival” event will kick off on January 25th (Lunar January 4th) this year. This is the most important festival in Puyuma culture. Young and old gather together and celebrate with song and dance. Come and join the festivities this lunar new year and immerse yourselves in the charisma of the fascinating tribal culture and spirit of unity.
The Puyuma people live in 8 villages and 10 tribes, including Zhiben, Lijia, Jianhe, Chulu, Baosang, and more. The people are spread around Taitung City and Beinan county. To help keep the people connected and pass down the Puyuma culture, beginning in 1989, the villages and tribes began taking turns hosting the joint festival. The festival became biannual in 1998 and has become one of the largest festivals in Taitung County.
This year’s joint festival will be hosted by the Katratripulr tribe with the theme “mukasaya ta mukepeir,” which means let us be united. The theme focuses on gathering together to become more powerful in order to reach our goals. The events will include songs and dances by the Puyuma tribes, traditional wrestling, archery, fun competitions, a tribal market, and more. We welcome guests to come to see and experience the lovely Puyuma culture. (Photo Credit:IG@yzh_storythief_amei)
