When visiting Taitung, besides enjoying the outdoors, why not try making something for a fun vacation memory? Enjoy being surrounded by mountains and forests, slow down your footsteps and feel the peace and quiet. Beiyuan Village, located north of Taiyuan Valley in Hedong Township, Taitung County, is home to the Pomelo Art Workshop. Beiyuan Village boasts rich animal and plant life, having rich soil to nourish all types of organic produce, keeping bees, making vinegar and jams, and processing pomelos into pomelo jam, pomelo vinegar, pomelo cleaning agents, even using the pomelo rind and membrane to create unique brooches, bracelets, bouquets, and many other handmade crafts. The workshop uses every last part of the pomelo to the max.
The Pomelo Art Workshop uses different techniques to use the entire pomelo fruit. Visit the workshop to learn about the pomelo product’s process and all of its nutritional values.
1. Using pomelo rind to create cleaning agents:
Pomelo rind contains natural essential oils. Once dried, the rind also has natural mosquito repelling effects. Soak the rinds in alcohol for a week to create an all natural mosquito repellent spray. The spray can also be used as a deodorant, has cleaning properties, and can even be processed into pomelo soap.
2. Using the flesh to make fruit vinegar:
Pomelo is high in nutritional value. The flesh is rich in protein, fiber, vitamin C, potassium, and other minerals. Chinese doctors believe the pomelo has cough and phlegm relieving, and digestion promoting properties. As vinegar is a common cooking and drinking ingredient, combining the two to create a new and refreshing fruit vinegar was the natural conclusion. The remaining pomelo membrane is also used in creating unique artwork.
