A new era of green transportation is unfolding in Taitung. In December 2024, Taitung became the first city in eastern Taiwan to introduce the YouBike public bike system. The initial rollout includes 14 rental stations and 140 bicycles, equally divided between regular YouBike 2.0 bikes and the electric-assisted 2.0E version.

This not only provides residents with a more environmentally friendly and convenient transportation option but also offers visitors a new perspective on exploring Taitung. Looking ahead, the county government aims to expand the system to 120 rental stations and 1,120 bicycles by the end of this year, further establishing Taitung as a low-carbon, sustainable city.

From a carbon emissions perspective, the environmental benefits of this initiative are significant. Each kilometer traveled by bicycle reduces approximately 0.23 kg of carbon emissions. With an estimated 500 daily users in Taitung City, each riding an average of 3 km per trip, the program is expected to reduce 126 tons of carbon emissions annually. Besides serving as an eco-friendly choice for daily commutes and shopping, YouBike also provides tourists with a slow-travel experience, allowing them to immerse themselves in the local atmosphere while promoting both economic development and environmental conservation.

Renting a YouBike is simple and intuitive. Users can download the YouBike app and link their EasyCard or iPASS for seamless contactless rentals. The 14 rental stations in Taitung City strategically cover key commercial districts, schools, and tourist attractions, including Taitung Bus Station, Taitung Night Market, and Taitung Art Museum. Notably, Taitung YouBike 2.0 has the highest proportion of electric-assisted bikes in Taiwan, ensuring an easy ride even in hot weather.

Additionally, during the trial operation period until March 31, 2025, users can enjoy the first 30 minutes of regular bike rentals for free, while electric-assisted bikes are available at half price. The county government has also launched a special campaign: “Ride YouBike in Taitung and Win a Free Hot Air Balloon Flight,” seamlessly integrating green transportation with local tourism experiences.

As the project progresses, YouBike 2.0 will gradually expand to other townships in Taitung County, including popular tourist destinations such as the Rift Valley, East Coast, and the South Link areas.

With carefully planned station locations and a comprehensive maintenance system, Taitung’s public bike network is set to become a key infrastructure connecting urban and rural areas, fostering low-carbon living, and opening a new chapter in Taitung’s sustainable development.
