Taitung’s Slow Economy and Slow Living
Taitung’s slow economy strategy has supported small-scale, sustainable agriculture, encouraging organic farming and reducing reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This protects the environment and boosts consumer confidence in food safety, thanks largely to the Taitung Slow Food Festival.

Taitung is vast, but organic farmers often struggle with sales and brand reputation due to scattered farmland, high prices, limited sales channels, and a lack of cold storage — all of which hurt income and willingness to keep farming. The Slow Food Festival brings together “Slow Farmers” selling direct from origin, “Slow Chefs” who carefully source ingredients, and “Slow Foodies” who embrace the concept as consumers, forming a sustainable chain from field to table.
This “Happy Slow Economy” boosts income and encourages residents to value their quality of life. Taitung has become the country’s second most livable city, with its slow economy standing as a prominent, influential model.

In Taitung, organic sustainable agriculture is a real paradigm balancing production with ecology. Over recent years, the slow economy’s sustainable principles have drawn more small farmers into the movement, away from chemical fertilizers and pesticides toward natural farming — revitalizing the land, preserving biodiversity, and reflecting their care for home and environment.
Taitung’s organic agriculture has thrived under the slow economy. Since 2017, verified organic farming area has grown from 867 to 1,320 hectares in 2023 — third-largest in Taiwan, surpassing Yunlin and Changhua — with the second-largest organic rice area nationwide.

Taitung’s organic farmlands double as natural classrooms for knowledge and life education. Local farmers have turned their farms into educational hubs where students experience sustainable living firsthand — not just learning its importance, but developing a taste and awareness for quality food that will shape how they choose food in the future.
In 2021, the Taitung County Agricultural Department ran 50 organic rice farming education sessions in local schools and served organic rice in 48 school lunch menus, letting students learn about organic cultivation while practicing a healthy, eco-friendly lifestyle.

The festival’s influence now extends beyond the Central Mountain Range, debuting at Taipei’s Huashan 1914 Creative Park in 2021 with a repeat in 2023 — promoting Taitung’s organic products and letting urban residents experience farm-to-table living through slow food seminars that ease the stress of city life.

Given the enthusiastic response, the festival may expand to more cities, letting residents experience Taitung’s slow rhythm without traveling far.
