Are you traveling in Chenggong Township and suddenly craving a cup of joe? The Tiao Gang Cafe by the Hsin-Kang Fishing Harbor can ‘fix’ that craving. Once you step foot into the café, the acupuncture point bronze mannequin by the entrance might make you wonder if you’ve entered a traditional medicine clinic. You wouldn’t be completely incorrect. This cafe used to be one of the most advanced medical clinics, Gao An Hospital. Besides just keeping the waiting area and the consultation room, much of the decoration and original furniture are still present which makes this a unique historical spot.
This old Japanese building has over 90 years of history. It has a lot of political, economic, medical, and religious historic significance. The building is also the final remaining two-story Japanese structure in the South Eastern parts of Taiwan. In 2003, this building was listed as a historical building and with the assistance of local governments, has been brought back to life as a comfortable dining space. Local youth work together to run this cafe and it has since become one of the new landmark destinations of Chenggong Township.
The owner of Tiao Gang Cafe is a traditional Chinese medicine doctor. He has incorporated his knowledge of herbal medicine and the cafe business to bring brand new tastes and experiences to the guests. For example, Hanfang Latte contains angelica sinensis and goji berries. The faint herbal scent pairs surprisingly well with coffee. Other delicious and healthy Hanfang beverages include “Eye Care tea,” “Fairy Float tea,” and “Throat Soothing Mama tea.” (Photo Credit:IG @pm_am_rely)
