“Taitung is ready for digital nomads.” On April 11, the National Development Council officially declared 2025 as the “Year of the Digital Nomad in Taiwan” and held the “Nomad Taiwan – Taitung Launch” ceremony at the Kitamachi Heritage Center. Taitung was thus designated as the first official demonstration zone for digital nomads in Taiwan.

The launch ceremony was attended by Taitung County Magistrate April Yao, Deputy Magistrate Wang Chih-hui, and Deputy Minister of the National Development Council Jan Fang-guan. The event also welcomed distinguished international guests from Japan, South Korea, Europe, and the United States, including government and industry representatives from Kyoto, Izumisano, and Hyuga, as well as delegates from South Korea’s central government and the Busan Center for Creative Economy & Innovation. Digital nomads from around the globe gathered in Taitung to witness this milestone that positions the county as a digital nomad hub in Asia.

Magistrate Yao noted that since 2021, Taitung has actively engaged with global nomads. The county launched the “TTNomad” platform in 2023, attracting over 120 registered nomads and fostering local industry connections. This year, the NDC selected Taitung as a demonstration zone and established a service center at National Taitung University, offering everyday support and English-language consultation to enhance the overall friendliness of the environment.

During the ceremony, the Taiwan Digital Nomad Association awarded the first-ever “Digital Nomad-Friendly Certification” to 17 local businesses. This initiative will expand to other sectors, aiming to create a comprehensive and welcoming ecosystem. Additionally, the Taitung County Government signed a memorandum of understanding with the Japan Digital Nomad Council to promote bilateral talent exchanges and resource-sharing.

To enrich the nomad experience, the county arranged an exploration tour on April 12, guiding digital nomads to discover Taitung’s natural and cultural charm. Magistrate Yao emphasized that Taitung’s exceptional natural surroundings and international friendliness make it an ideal destination to achieve a true work-life balance. The government will continue optimizing the environment for digital nomads and make Taitung the top destination for global remote workers.
