At the beginning of 2025, Taitung’s hospitality industry received some great news! Shiacare B&B on Green Island and Dagedan House BNB in Taimali have successfully passed the rigorous evaluation of the globally recognized “GTS Green Travel Seal”, receiving international certification. This achievement further solidifies Taitung’s outstanding performance in sustainable tourism.

The Taitung County Tourism Department stated that in addition to integrating sustainability initiatives into tourism activities, it has also invested resources to support 30 lodging establishments in becoming “Taitung Sustainable Lodgings”. Operators are encouraged to use local products, such as Taitung Red Oolong Tea and slippers made from Taimali coffee grounds, to reduce their carbon footprint, support local agriculture and fisheries, and stimulate the community economy. By minimizing resource waste and strengthening community connections, tourism is transformed from a simple experience into a responsible journey. This year, the county government aims to further expand its influence by promoting the “Taitung Slow Economy Brand”, integrating sustainable tourism with local cultural identity.
The GTS Green Travel Seal is a globally recognized sustainable tourism certification, known for its strict evaluation standards. Applicants must comply with business registration and fire safety regulations while implementing over 30 sustainability measures, including eco-friendly product usage, cultural preservation, and environmental conservation. Certified lodgings must also undergo annual re-evaluation to ensure their commitment to sustainable development.

Among the certified establishments, Shiacare B&B on Green Island has actively promoted green travel since its founding. It leverages the Zhaori Hot Spring’s unique geographical advantages to offer experiences such as Blue Cave adventures, diving, kayaking, and guided historical and cultural tours. These activities allow visitors to deeply appreciate the beauty of Green Island while respecting mother nature.

Dagedan House BNB, located in Jinlun, Taimali, was previously recognized as one of Taiwan’s Top 25 B&Bs by Tripadvisor in 2016 and 2018. Dedicated to local engagement and sustainable development, its founder, Sam Wusaan, left his position as a high-level hotel executive in Taipei more than a decade ago to return home and advocate for sustainable diets with low carbon footprint. He also co-founded the South-link Eco Tourism Union, collaborating with local businesses to establish sustainable travel models.
