The Resource Circulation Administration of the Ministry of Environment has officially implemented the “Targets and Measures for Restrictions of Single-Use Lodging Supplies” as of January 1, 2025. Under this regulation, hospitality operators are prohibited from providing shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and lotion in plastic packaging smaller than 180ml. Additionally, combs, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, shaving foam, and shower caps containing plastic materials can no longer be displayed for free selection by customers in hotel premises. The Taitung County Environmental Protection Bureau has actively inspected and guided nearly 400 hospitality establishments, with most operators expressing strong support for the policy. They believe that the initiative will help reduce waste in Taitung, contribute to environmental sustainability, and appreciate the cooperation of travelers in preserving Taitung’s net-zero goals, slow economy, and commitment to sustainability.

The Taitung County Government stated that as a tourism destination renowned for its natural environment and cultural charm, environmental conservation has always been a priority. The plastic reduction policy introduced by the Ministry of Environment not only contributes to long-term environmental sustainability but also establishes a solid foundation for sustainable tourism. The hospitality industry’s proactive response to the initiative aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and continues to progress towards SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Lin Ming-cheng, Deputy General Manager of Formosan Naruwan Hotel Resort Taitung, initially had concerns about guest reception of the policy but found that over 95% of travelers were highly accepting and brought their own toiletries. He believes this is a positive environmental initiative worth promoting. Meanwhile, Ms. Cheng, a hotel operator in Taitung City, noted that the policy not only reduces waste pollution but also enhances environmental awareness among travelers. Many establishments have switched to large refillable bath products and encourage guests to bring their own toiletries, which in turn fosters a sense of personal responsibility for Taitung’s environmental sustainability. A visitor from Pingtung, Mr. Liu, shared that carrying a personal travel toiletry kit has become a habit for him, which reduces waste and leads more people to cherish Taitung’s natural beauty.

The Taitung County Environmental Protection Bureau calls on everyone to take small steps in daily life to protect this beautiful land together. By making eco-friendly choices, we can shape a future where sustainability becomes the new hallmark of tourism in Taitung!
