Chosen by Taiwan’s National Development Council (NDC) as a pilot location for the launch of its “Year of the Digital Nomad,” Taitung is leading the way in fostering a friendly international environment for remote work. On June 7, Taitung County Magistrate April Yao attended the NDC’s “Taiwan Digital Nomad Rally,” showcasing the county’s commitment and action in embracing digital nomadism and integrating remote work and life.
Since 2020, Taitung has proactively implemented digital nomad policies and engaged with Gold Card holders working in Taiwan, inviting them to experience the county’s unique cultural and natural environment. In 2023, the county launched the TTNomads community platform, which has grown to over 100 members, providing an online space for information sharing and interaction. This initiative has attracted digital nomads to stay short-term in Taitung, host workshops, and engage with the local community. In 2025, Taitung was selected by the NDC as a key pilot location for the “Year of the Digital Nomad,” offering dedicated service points and consultations, and further strengthening international ties through a memorandum of understanding signed with the Japan Digital Nomad Association.
April Yao emphasized that remote work has become the norm in the post-pandemic era. With its stunning mountains and ocean, diverse cultures, and welcoming atmosphere, Taitung is one of Asia’s ideal destinations for achieving a true work-life balance. This year, the NDC organized the Digital Nomad Launch Ceremony in Taitung, welcoming nomads from around the world. A specially designed one-day immersive tour allowed participants to experience first-hand the county’s unique lifestyle and culture, receiving positive feedback and propelling Taitung onto the global stage once again.
Digital nomadism has invigorated the local economy, establishing Taitung as a hub connecting global remote professionals with local revitalization efforts. Looking ahead, the county will continue to deepen domestic and international cooperation, enhance supportive policies, and welcome more digital nomads to discover and experience the beauty of Taitung — turning it into a dream destination for digital nomads worldwide.
The event also included exhibitions and networking activities. The Taitung County Government shared practical experiences and results from its digital nomad initiatives. Thanks to its natural beauty and cultural richness, Taitung continues to draw digital talent. Magistrate Yao was recently honored as a “Five-Star County Mayor” by Global Views Monthly, a testament to her highly acclaimed leadership. As the global digital work trend grows stronger, Taitung is moving steadily forward to become a premier international digital nomad destination.
