The hot event Bombing of Master Handan has been held in Taitung for 32 years and has become a world-famous cultural tradition. The event, which has been canceled in the past three years due to COVID regulations, is finally coming back this year during the Lantern Festival. Over 50 temples have already agreed to join the festivities.
Master Handan is a god of money. The people believe that by throwing firecrackers and chasing the cold away, you will be blessed by the god of money in the coming year. The image of sparks and flames being thrown at Master Handan standing on a celestial throne and the loud crackling of firecrackers is truly a sight to see for visitors.
To pass down the cultural traditions, the event organizer, Taitung Xuanwu Temple, has included the new events “Master Handan and Firecracker Thrower” and “East Handan Cultural Inheritance Workshop” to allow participants to climb onto the thrones to experience the bombing and understand the cultural meaning behind the event.
