Qingqing Grassland is located between the Hongtou and Yeyin tribal villages and is the perfect place in Orchid Island to stargaze after having admired the sunset. Travelers can head down the round-the-island highway (East 80) and they will see signs directing them toward the Qingqing Grassland. The grassland is only about a 10-minute walk from the entrance. Once you reach the destination, you’ll find your horizon is suddenly expanded. The endless grassy fields are peaceful and stunning. Since the grassland was originally a coral reef terrace, the soil is rich in nutrients such as iron and magnesium which nurtures the beautiful natural scene. The grassland is filled with wild lilies in the springtime, fields of wavy grass in the summer, and dancing silver grass in the fall and winter.
If you plan on watching the lovely sunset at Qingqing Grassland, we recommend you check the sunset schedule on Orchid Island for that day, and plan on arriving half an hour in advance. Follow the winding path up to the highest vantage point, and sit on the soft grassy fields as you enjoy the salty sea breeze and watch as the setting sun dye the entire field into a vibrant golden orange that blends into the horizon. As there is very minimal light pollution in the area, you can also see the galaxy here at night. The sparkling night sky is sure to leave a memorable impression on you. (Gentle reminder: There are no trees or buildings that offer shade around the Qingqing Grassland. Please prepare the appropriate sunblock and clothing and remember to hydrate to prevent the danger of heat stroke. The grassland is located on a sea cliff, please pay attention to your personal safety when approaching for taking photographs.) (Photo credit: Taitung County Government)
