Five Generations of Turnip Cake Craft

With origins on Baosang Road in Taitung City, Mook Turnip Cake is a long-established breakfast shop that has been sharing its aroma for over sixty years. Founded by the Ko family and passed down through five generations, the shop was originally known as “Baosang Radish Cake.” Upholding traditional handcrafted methods, the radish cakes are steamed in wooden steamers, resulting in a springy yet tender texture and a light, delicate flavor—an enduring taste of nostalgia cherished by local residents.

The fifth-generation successor, Ko Ruei-De, continues the family legacy while introducing new ideas to the traditional vegetarian radish cake. Creative variations featuring ingredients such as cheese and gac fruit have been added to the menu, along with side dishes like pork blood soup slow-simmered with pork bones, freshly brewed daily teas, and the shop’s own signature sauces. These thoughtful additions allow the classic flavors to continue evolving with the times.

More than just a breakfast spot, Mook Turnip Cake represents a culinary story deeply rooted in Taitung. The shop preserves the simple, old-street atmosphere of the neighborhood and warmly welcomes travelers to enjoy this iconic Taiwanese delicacy—one that carries the auspicious meaning of “good fortune and prosperity.”
