Located on Zhongshan Road in Chishang, Grandma Young’s Kitchen brings the authentic flavors of Shanxi to Taitung. Rooted in northern Chinese noodle traditions, the restaurant is known for its handmade noodles, offering a firm, chewy texture paired with the signature balance of tangy vinegar, chili heat, and aromatic oil.
The signature dish, Da Pan Ji (Big Plate Chicken) Noodles, features tender chicken and potatoes coated in aromatic chili oil, delivering layers of flavor without being overly spicy. Side dishes such as crispy pork, pickled cabbage with vinegar, and steamed egg custard add variety and round out the meal. The menu also incorporates Chishang’s well-known rice, with house-developed rice noodles that blend Shanxi-style flavors with a texture and taste tailored to local Taiwanese preferences.
The owner, a “Grandma” who moved from Shanxi and eventually settled in Taitung brought with her the flavors of home. This small eatery has since become a place where travelers unexpectedly encounter authentic taste of another region.
