Have you ever, in your imagination, thought that you would one day be able to sit along the shores or rice paddies of Taitung, enjoying the fresh air and lovely views, while watching live stage performances? Taitung’s breathtaking mountain and ocean views have always been the muse and inspiration to many people. The Taitung County Government began creating a public stage space in nature for the Taitung Fringe Festival in 2020. Not only do the performances break free of traditional theater frameworks, but each performance is also custom-made to fit the local environment, humanities, and culture, as well as jam-packed with Taitung’s memories and emotions. The number of participants in the festival has grown each year, making it one of Taitung’s most representative art performances.

The 2022 Taitung Fringe Festival will be held in venues all around Taitung from September 24 to November 27. The theme this year is, “When was the last time you felt that life was wonderful?” 15 programs will be performed at 43 showings ensuring that there will be quality events each week. This year’s Fringe Festival will include two new venues. The venues are located all around the mountain line, ocean line, south link line, and the city, locations including Dulan, Flowing Lake, Shanyuan Bay, other beautiful ocean and mountain view locations, Luye Shrine, Chengguang’ao Cultural Landscape, Guanshan Tianhou Temple, and other historical and cultural buildings. The idea is to bring art performances and the locations of our daily lives together and to welcome everyone to join in.

The performance types are varied, including dance, theater, song, and exhibitions. We welcome everyone to browse through the list of shows and pick the performances they are interested in. The WeArt Performing Arts Platform for example, will collaborate with artists from the east coast to bring us Mountain Ocean Swing and Sing. The show is composed of two main performances and an exhibition where guests will be invited to experience life like the locals. The performance by Lit Art, Take A Sip of The Thousand-Year-Old Holy Water, will be performed on the move between three locations, Flowing Lake, the estuarine ecosystem observation pond, and the Beinan River Estuary. The performance is sure to bring a unique visual and travel experience for the audience. E.milii Production’s Crown-of-thorns incorporates Japanese Shinto and Taiwanese Temple culture elements. The show guides audience members through the shrine through dance and painting rituals that are combined with traditional mixed vocal singing to recreate the spirit and glory of the Long Tian Immigration Village. There are countless fun programs to participate in. The audience wouldn’t simply be traveling to Taitung to watch a quick show, rather they would enter the mountain and ocean stage venues with the performers and take in the artwork, and humanistic and cultural effects. By doing so, they will gain a deep emotional connection to the land and venue.
