The ocean connects islands, and a shared station name — “Duoliang” in Taitung and “Tara” in Saga Prefecture — has brought Taitung County and Tara Town closer together and opened a new chapter in their international exchange. After a year of online interaction, including joint lesson planning by teachers and video exchanges between students, the two sides gradually built a strong connection and signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Friendly Exchange and Cooperation. On August 10, the Tara Town Board of Education led eight student representatives from four local schools on a visit to Fushan Elementary School in Taitung County. Taitung welcomed the delegation with 24 students from four schools, turning their online exchanges into face-to-face interaction through cultural activities, educational exchange, and exhibition visits.
Mei-yao Tsai, Director of the Education Department of the Taitung County Government, said that the friendship between Taitung and Tara Town was built on a year of steady online exchange. Through teacher collaboration, student interaction, and cultural sharing, the two sides gradually developed trust and understanding, paving the way for this in-person visit. The exchange allowed Japanese teachers and students to experience Taitung’s educational environment, natural scenery, and local culture firsthand, while also giving Taitung students the opportunity to broaden their international outlook and deepen their cross-cultural understanding through direct interaction.
During the event, students from Japan presented Menburyu, a traditional folk performance from Saga Prefecture, showcasing the region’s cultural heritage. Taitung students prepared flag-themed bead crafts and physical activities, helping students from both sides connect through teamwork and cultural experiences. The Tara Town delegation also visited Awaken Your Potential at Taitung Expo 2026, where they learned about Taitung’s recent efforts to promote educational innovation by combining local culture, digital technology, and sustainability.
Director Tsai noted that education is an important bridge for international connection and for nurturing future generations. Moving from online exchange to in-person visits not only reflects the deepening partnership between Taitung and Tara Town, but also gives students in both places the chance to develop global awareness and cross-cultural communication skills. The county government will continue to promote international education and partnerships with overseas institutions, creating more opportunities for exchange and further strengthening educational ties between the two communities.
