Located in Chenggong Township, Fuhecheng Bakery was established in 1931. Its founder, Xiliu Hong, moved from Nantou to Taitung and learned pastry-making techniques from a baker at a Japanese wagashi shop. After World War II, he took over the shop and renamed it Fuhecheng. The second generation continued making the original pastries while also introducing traditional Hakka rice treats such as mugwort rice cakes and red tortoise cakes, reflecting the family’s Hakka culinary background and gradually shaping Fuhecheng’s distinctive flavors.
Now run by the third generation, the bakery continues to make its products by hand and fresh each day, using local ingredients in its pastries. Its signature mochi goes through several steps to achieve a soft, chewy texture and comes in traditional flavors such as peanut, sesame, red bean, and mung bean. The mugwort rice cakes are made with organically grown mugwort from the family’s own fields and filled with shredded radish, shrimp, and pork. Another traditional Taitung pastry available here is Fengzi cake, a bean paste pastry wrapped in red paper and a distinctive local gift to take home.
For more than 90 years, Fuhecheng Bakery has brought together Japanese pastry-making techniques, Hakka rice-based foods, and Taitung’s local food culture in one long-standing bakery, keeping familiar flavors alive across generations in Chenggong Township.
Products in the shop are labeled in both Chinese and English, making it easier for international visitors to discover Fuhecheng’s traditional pastries and local flavors. (Photo credit: Fuhecheng Bakery)
