Taiwan for the first time launched digital nomad visas from the beginning of 2025, and as Taitung is the nation’s designated beta site for digital nomads, the Taitung County Government has stepped onto the international stage to strengthen exchanges with global remote workers and international partners. On August 8, Taitung Deputy Magistrate Wang Chih-Hui attended the Taiwan-Japan Digital Nomad Summit at Expo 2025 Osaka in Japan, joining government agencies and civic organizations from both Taiwan and Japan to discuss global trends relating to digital nomads. He also shared how Taitung is leveraging its unique strengths to establish itself an attractive digital nomad hub in the Asia-Pacific region and invited digital nomads from around the world to come experience Taitung.

The summit was co-hosted by the National Development Council (NDC), Chishang Township Office, Taiwan Digital Nomad Association, Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), Kyoto City Government, Nara City Government, Colive Fukuoka, and the Japan Work Association (JWA). The Taitung County Government also set up a booth at the Osaka Expo to showcase the region’s stunning mountain and ocean scenery, rich indigenous culture, and slow-paced lifestyle to international visitors. The presentation raised Taitung’s visibility on the global stage while highlighting its achievements and vision as Taiwan’s incubator for digital nomads.

At the summit, Deputy Magistrate Wang highlighted Taitung’s abundant natural and cultural resources, including its Pacific coastline, Central Mountain Range, hot springs, and the deep cultural heritage of its seven indigenous groups. These elements create an ideal environment where remote work can seamlessly integrate with daily life. Taitung County has already certified 60 bilingual-friendly businesses and 44 bilingual-friendly tourism sites as part of an initiative to build an environment that is welcoming to international visitors and residents. At the same time, the county is continuing to promote its Digital Nomad Friendly Certification and working to upgrade local accommodations, co-working spaces, and daily services to better meet international nomads’ needs and allow for easy integration. Taitung’s abundant nature and cultural activities will further allow nomads to forge deep connections with local communities. By working in step with tourism development, these nomad initiatives aim to contribute to local economic vitality.

Since 2021, Taitung has proactively invited international nomads for short-term stays. In 2023, the county launched the TTNOMAD social media platform, which now has over 100 registered members and continues to facilitate interaction between nomads, local industries, and communities. In 2025, Taitung was officially designated by Taiwan’s National Development Council (NDC) as a beta site for digital nomads, resulting in the establishment of a dedicated digital nomad hub at National Taitung University. The hub offers event information, daily life support, and bilingual services to facilitate an internationally friendly environment.

Through participating in Osaka’s digital nomad summit and exhibiting at Expo 2025, the Taitung County Government has demonstrated its commitment to advancing Taiwan’s national goals for digital nomads. These efforts will continue to raise Taitung’s visibility among digital nomads the world over and position the region as one of the world’s most desirable destinations for remote work and lifestyle.
