Green Island Lighthouse

The Green Island Lighthouse is located at the Northwest Cape Zhongliao Village. The lighthouse was built in 1939 and has over 80 years of history. It was declared a historic building by the Taitung County Government in 2003. The white cylinder structure stands 33.3 feet tall on a green hill and is set off by the azure shoreline. You will even see fields full of wild lilies in the spring. This picture-postcard scenery is one of the must-see destinations on Green Island. The lighthouse control room isn’t open to the public and only the park area is open to the public on weekdays, but many people still come to snap some memorable pictures when visiting.

The Green Island Lighthouse is not only beautiful to look at, it also tells the story of an international friendship. In 1937, the largest cruise liner in the world at the time, named “SS President Hoover,” became stranded just north of Green Island. The passengers and crew were rescued by the kind residents of Green Island. In return for their acts of kindness and bravery, the United States Government raised money through the red cross to build the Green Island Lighthouse. The lighthouse was damaged during WWII. The pure white exterior is the result of being rebuilt and repainted in 1948. The lighthouse lights were also upgraded to provide direction for boats at sea in the dark nights.
